About Us

The New York State Public Employee Conference (NYSPEC) was formed in 1977 as a means of bringing together municipal labor unions and forming a unified voice for public employees. What started as an organization of 20 member unions today has nearly 60 members and we’re still growing.

NYSPEC promotes the general welfare of our member organizations and acts as a clearinghouse for legislative issues on behalf of all member organizations. We represent the interests of public employees, strive to improve their workplace, and fight to preserve and enhance their way of life. NYSPEC gives our members a strong voice not only in the political arena, but with benefit and service providers as well.

Each year NYSPEC holds two major gatherings - our Annual Convention (in late Fall) and our Annual Legislative Breakfast (in early February) - as well as other meetings throughout the year. Our Convention is a planning session for legislative strategy while the Legislative Breakfast is a chance to present that Agenda to Legislative Leaders. NYSPEC has become such a prominent player in the labor movement that more than half of New York’s 212 Legislative leaders make it a priority to attend the event.

Whether NYSPEC is bringing our message to the New York City Council or the New York State Legislature, our elected officials listen. They know that NYSPEC has become a powerful organization of labor leaders representing nearly 1.5 million hard-working public employees - and voters.

NYSPEC is a highly effective organization with the power and flexibility to focus exclusively on doing business for the good of our members.

Any union or organization consisting of public employees in the State of New York is eligible for membership in the Conference (click on Become a Member for an application).
